How to use your GameCube controller with Nintendo Switch
The Wii and Wii U both allowed gamers to use Nintendo's older GameCube controllers, which many players preferred to use for competitive gaming; however, the Nintendo Switch has a dedicated Pro Controller, which may leave you wondering about the fate of compatibility with GameCube controllers. Fear not. The GameCube controller can work with the Switch; here's how you set it up.
First things first
You'll need a USB GameCube controller adapter. The officially licensed Nintendo-made ones for the Wii U are only available to import from Japan, and most of them are used. They are quite a few third-party adapters that have been made over the years, and they should work with the Nintendo Switch.
My suggestion is to look into the Mayflash GameCube Controller Adapter (pictured to the right), it comes highly recommended and is well-review, plus it only costs about $20.
How to connect your GameCube controller to your Nintendo Switch
Since the adapter must be plugged in, it will pop up as a USB controller even if you are using a wireless GameCube WaveBird controller.
- Plug your adapter into the USB port on the dock. Your controller should be turned on and connected to the adapter.
- Go to the Controller tab down by the settings.
- Select Change Grip/ Order, the first option to appear in the Controller settings.
-
Click the left and right buttons on your GameCube controller to connect to the Switch.
Once your controller has connected, it should show up as a USB controller. If it does, then you have officially set up your GameCube controller.
Compatibility with the Nintendo Switch
While using this method above, you can play every Switch game that's compatible with a Pro Controller, the GameCube controller doesn't have all the necessary buttons to make it optimal for every game.
The GameCube controller is probably best for classic games with simpler controllers, like Mario Kart or Sonic Mania, but it will lackluster in newer games like Splatoon 2 or Breath of the Wild. How will it work with Super Smah Bros.? Only time will tell.
Will you be using a GameCube controller with your Nintendo Switch?
