Best Nintendo Switch Games of 2017

The Switch game library is getting bigger all the time, but there are still some stellar standouts that win the Besties.

The Nintendo Switch is getting easier to find and more and more people are jumping on the bandwagon, especially now that more titles have launched. If you think there aren't enough games available on Switch, think again. in addition to physical game cartridges, the eShop is bursting at the seams with retro, indie, and big-named titles. Here's a list of the best of both worlds.

Skyrim

Skyrim comes to mobile gaming thanks to a little help from Nintendo Switch. You can now traverse the vast landscape of Tamriel to fight the dreaded dragons at home or on the go. The game is perfectly matched with Switch's hybrid experience. Players can grind on their couch for hours and then free up the living room TV for the family while continuing their story on mobile without missing a beat.

Its open-world experience is on par with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, giving players hours and hours (or months and months) of gameplay that is ever-changing.

Skyrim is available as a game card or digital download for $60.

Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey is Nintendo's flagship Switch title. It's the game that got everyone talking and many people buying. Players go on a world-hopping adventure to save Princess Peach from that creepy Bowser, yet again. In this 3D-style exploration game, you can follow a specific storyline or head off on your own adventure. As long as you have enough Power Moons to fuel you to the next locale, you're in business.

You'll be able to hop, skip, and jump from platform to platform in various mini-dungeons throughout each world and beat the big bosses in an effort to stop the impending wedding that Bowser has planned.

Your trusty companion, Cappy, is a ghost that inhabits your hat, which you can use to take down enemies or even control them. If you're planning on playing a two-player game, one of you controls Mario while the other controls Cappy. It's fun from all angles.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

The Xenoblade series got its own mobile update with the help of the Switch. Follow along with Rex and Pyra as they go in search of Elysium. In this deep story open world game set in Alrest, players can move from one beautiful landscape to another, following real-time night and day cycles.

In addition to searching for humanity's paradise, players fight enemies in turn-based battles where your character's statistics are almost as important as your tactical planning. You've got to hit your opponent at just the right time while keeping an eye on your party's health.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 launches December 1 as a game card or digital download for $60.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

It's the reason you bought, or at least want a Nintendo Switch. It's the best Zelda title since Ocarina of Time. It's a winner, for sure. If you only buy one game for Nintendo Switch (which would just be silly ... right?), it should be Breath of the Wild.

It's incredibly open-world, more so than any of the other version, and has multiple main and side tasks for you to complete. You could spend hours just taming horses or cooking special foods and elixirs. Even after you finish the main storyline, you can go back and find all of the side quests for a completely new experience.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available as a game card or digital download for $60.

Splatoon 2

There is no better way to show someone you love them than to splatter them, and everything around them, with paint. Splatoon 2, the obvious follow up to the original ink and splatter game, gets a few new features, like local multiplayer Turf War battles, which you can play with others by daisy-chaining your Switches together. There's also a lot of new weapons, new moves, and new gear. Splatoon 2 is the first game that takes advantage of Nintendo's online features. Using the Nintendo Online app, you can voice chat with other players on your team through your phone.

Even if you've never played Splatoon before, you can still have a great time with this new version. It's a big hit with Nintendo fans, and practically everyone with a Switch is playing it right now.

Splatoon 2 is available as a game card or digital download for $60.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

This is exclusive to Nintendo Switch. Yes, Mario Kart 8 is available for Wii U, but this deluxe version has a few extra features that you can't get anywhere else. Now, I'm not saying you should go out and buy a Switch, just to play this version, but if you already have a Switch, you're going to want to add it to your collection.

You can play with up to four other players in the same room using quad-screen viewing. The Joy-Con controller can be split in two so you can share the love with your friends. You can also connect multiple Switch devices together and play with up to eight people at once on local wi-fi.

Some of the exclusive features include Smart Steering (which traditionalists will hate), the ability to hold two items at once, and a revamped Battle Mode arena. The rest of the new features you'll have to find out when you play.

Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition

OK, so this version of Minecraft is no different than the dozen others available across all platforms, other than it comes stock with a couple of cool skins that you have to otherwise buy elsewhere. But, it's still really cool, really fun to play, and you can play it on your big screen or take it with you on the go, which is something you can't do with any other platform.

Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition comes with Classic, City, Fantasy, Festive, Natural, and Super Mario texture packs. If you're a diehard fan of Minecraft, you probably already have this across multiple platforms (I know I do), so why not one more.

Currently, Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition is only available in the eShop as a digital download for $30. You can sign up to receive an email when it becomes available for sale as a game cartridge.
